New PIVA Info & Preliminary Tournament Dates for 2010 – 2011

June 2nd, 2010

The 2009 – 2010 season has created quite a bit of momentum and I am pleased to announce that PIVA continues to grow.  Next year we will be adding several new teams including, but not limited to the University of Montana (M), the University of Portland (M), and Portland State (W).  This raises the total teams within PIVA to 32 teams (18 Mens, 14 Women).  Due to the large amount of teams, tournament hosting will become an even more challenging piece of our tournament planning, promotion, and facilitation.  However in an effort to make this as painless as possible, I would ask that teams submit bids to host as soon as possible.  We are looking at the following dates for tournaments next year, so please work with your sport club directors to explore the possibly of hosting.  I would also offer the following requirements for hosting.  The benefits of hosting include complimentary tournament entry fees, all of the volleyballs used in competition (8-12 volleyballs), and $500 hosting compensation.  This equates to an overall financial benefit of just under $1000, along with the benefit of not having to travel and pay for lodging for your team.

Preliminary Tournament Dates
November 12-14, 2010 – Business Time Classic
December 3-5, 2010 – PIVA v. USAV Vollapalooza
January 28-30, 2011 – All-Star Showdown
February 11-13, 2011 – Valentines Day Classic
February 25-27, 2011 – PIVA Championships

Requirements for Hosting
1. Bid submitted to PIVA in doc or docx format illustrating the benefit of hosting at the institution/facility complete with facility fees, amenities, etc.
2. Facilities must be capable of having 4-8 courts for 2 days from 8AM-10PM (both days)
3. Courts must have at least 10 feet between each other and the walls of the gym
4. Courts must be within 5 minutes walking from each other if they are in different buildings (i.e. University of Idaho)
5. The ability to leave the poling systems and nets in place between the days of play.

I would also like to address some of the enhancements that PIVA will implement next year.  First we will be officially connected to NCVF, and by association USAV.  This will provide additional stability, insurance, and enhanced legitimacy nationally.  However this will elevate the cost of dues to $200 per first team and $50 per second team.  Second we are partnering with a group of certified USAV officials in the region to provide certified up and down officials for the semifinals and finals of all tournaments.  Finally, we will be working with the regional USAV organizations to make our Fall tournaments even bigger and more competitive.

PIVA Champs are Crowned in Spokane

March 10th, 2010

Spokane, WA – PIVA Championships lived up to the hype, as 25 teams met in a winner take all tournament at the Warehouse in Spokane, WA on 2.27.10 to see who would lift the trophy and get the free trip to nationals.  The women’s division offered surprise after surprise as often overlooked Seattle University Redhawks gave Gonzaga Blue its first loss of the season in dramatic fashion during the afternoon pools.  The final four boasted 4 of the regions’ 5 top teams.  Although the University of Washington 1 provided Gonzaga Blue with only its second loss of the season earlier in the day, Gonzaga Blue got the better of them in the semis in 3 tight games advancing through the losers bracket to play the loser of the Eastern Washington and Seattle U match.  Seattle U played hard but Eastern proved to be too much advancing to the finals of the tournament.  Seattle then faced Gonzaga Blue for the second time during the day for a spot in the finals, but this time Gonzaga Blue was too tough as they overwhelmed Seattle U setting up a finals match with the Eagles of Eastern Washington.  Due to the double elimination format, Gonzaga Blue would have to beat still undefeated for the day Eastern Washington in a best 2 of three sets and then beat them again in 1 game to 25 to take the crown and keep their hold on the top spot in the regional rankings.  The Zags took the Eagles in 2 in the first match setting up the 1AM final game.  The Zags dug deep but the aggressive swings of Eastern were too much as an upset of historical proportions unfolded.  The Eastern Washington University Eagles became the first ever PIVA Champs in the women’s division and the highly favored Zags were left to think about what might of been.  Aiko Nagabuchi (OH from Eastern Washington University) was named Conference Most Outstanding Player.

The men’s division was also a wild time as Washington State surprised everyone and came out of pool play as the number 1 seed.  Surprise teams from Central Washington and Montana State also strengthened the field as the teams battled late into the night.  In the end the final four consisted of Boise State, Gonzaga University 1, Central Washington, and the number 1 ranked Oregon Ducks.  In the first semifinal Oregon dispatched of Central Washington in straight sets.  The same occurred in the semis of the winners bracket as  Gonzaga 1 took Boise State in two highly contested sets.   This forced Boise and Oregon to square off for a chance to face Gonzaga in the finals.  In a tough match, Oregon squeezed out a victory.  This created the the match up that most were hoping for, the number 1 and defending PIVA Champion Oregon Duck versus number 2 Gonzaga Bulldogs for the crown.  The Ducks took the first but the Zags stormed back taking game two.  The third game was back and forth until the Zags’ outside attack proved to be too much.  The Zags emerged victorious, were crowned champs, and awarded the free trip to nationals.  Dylan Kinnsella (OH from Gonzaga 1) was named Conference Most Outstanding Player.

PIVA Blows Up at the All Star Showdown

March 9th, 2010

Walla Walla, WA – The All Star Showdown was a big bucket of craziness as the teams invaded Whitman College in Walla Walla on 2.20.10 & 2.21.10.  Being the biggest PIVA tourney ever with 23 teams attending, the teams saw the highest level of competition to date. All-Star Saturday night saw the East dismantle the West in the women’s All-Star Game and Alex Catabayan from Gonzaga Blue took home MOP honors.  In the men’s All-Star Showdown the game was much closer as the East squeaked out a victory over the West 30-28.  Scotty Alexander also from Gonzaga University took home MOP honors.  Although the All-Star Games were great, the star of the show was Bounce Contest winner, Devin Curran from the University of Oregon.  Standing only 5′7″, this guy can fly.  In his final bounce, he jumped over his teammate and crush a 2 ball that made the crowd come to their feet.

The women’s division was loaded as tourney surprise, Eastern Washington University, matched up with mighty Gonzaga Blue in the finals.  Eastern competed valiantly, but in the end Gonzaga Blue maintained its dominance and took their third tourney of the year.  The following are the final results in order of finish.

  1. Gonzaga University Blue
  2. Eastern Washington University
  3. Boise State University
  4. University of Idaho 1
  5. University of Washington
  6. Gonzaga University Red
  7. Willamette University
  8. University of Idaho 2

The men’s division finals drew the highly anticipated match up of the No. 1 and No. 2 regionally ranked teams.  Gonzaga 1 and Oregon went head to head exchanging blow after blow.  Gonzaga took game one in a close one and Oregon outlasted the Zags in game two setting up a winner take all game 3.  Although the Ducks won the second game, they lost 2009 All-Conference MH, Tommy Peterson due to injury.  However his replacement played admirably and the Oregon block proved to be too tough as they took Zags in game 3.  This gave Oregon the crown, the Zags their first loss of the season, and assured the Ducks the top spot in the upcoming polls.  The following are the full results in order of finish.

  1. University of Oregon
  2. Gonzaga University 1
  3. Western Washington University

February 1st, 2010

Moscow, Idaho – It was all business at the University of Idaho this past weekend as PIVA held its first tournament of the season, The Business Time Classic.  Twenty-two teams made their way to Moscow for the event, which made for an exciting two days of volleyball.
